Humor
Much of my life’s work has been involved with humor. For example, I did a book of cartoons about the Bible, titled, “THE GOOD BOOK…of Bible Cartoons.” (My father was a Presbyterian minister.) Here are a couple of sample cartoons::
“Lazarus, Raised from the Dead by Jesus, Returns to his Job”
Art: We see two men talking. One says, “I’m sorry I missed work last week. I was dead.”
“Adam, the First Man, on the First Day after Creation”
Art: We see Adam, standing in the garden of Eden. He looks out at us and speaks: “Well, so far so good!”
“Adam’s First Words on Meeting Eve”
Art: We see Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden at their first meeting. Adam Speaks, “What’s for Dinner?”
Another place where I’ve used humor extensively is my book, “ONE GOOD IDEA.” This is actually a course in how to be an innovator. I have based it on a humor model because humor and the process of innovation both follow a similar course. They are both asymmetric and are oxygenated by surprise. I wrote some cartoons for the book, and offer a couple here:
• Famous Innovators in History: The Wright Brothers.
“The world”s first powered flight took place in Kitty Hawk North Carolina in 1903.”
Art: We see the famous picture of the first flight just a few feet above the ground. Comment below: “Orville was only in the air for twelve seconds. But when he landed, his luggage was in Denver.”
• Famous Innovators in History: Artist Salvador Dali.
“Artist Salvador Dali’s watch, the day after the warranty expired.”
Art: The famous painting by Dali, showing a limp pocket watch draped over a tree limb.
The book features a chapter titled, “The Parsley Theory of Humor.” It also includes several really great stories I have collected. Enjoy!
